Defensible space is a buffer of cleared, managed vegetation between your home and the surrounding wildland. In Idaho's Wildland Urban Interface — where homes and forests meet — it is your single most effective tool against wildfire loss.
When a wildfire approaches, embers can travel up to a mile ahead of the fire front, landing on or near your home. A properly maintained defensible space zone reduces the intensity of heat reaching your structure, limits ember accumulation in combustible materials, and creates conditions where suppression is actually possible.
